Food & Dining in Albania

Restaurants have opened everywhere in Albania, and a wide range of options is available. Traditional Albanian food is tasty. It always includes meat (mostly lamb) and has a Mediterranean style. Local dishes include shish kebab, qofte (meatballs), roasted mutton qofte zgore (herb sausages) and lamb stew. Seafood is the specialty of many restaurants, and Ohrid Lake trout is a local delicacy. Soups can be very good, especially the lemon-flavoured rice soup. Fruit, in season, is delicious.

Private restaurants are appearing rapidly in Albania. In the more popular places, it is necessary to reserve a table and to be punctual. Dining in Tirana is very cheap by European standards; even in more upscale restaurants a main course will not cost much more than 800 lek and the standard is good.

Small shops and roadside vendors throughout the city sell foods such as sufllaqe, doner, and gjiro for less than 200 lek. Also try the local specialty, byrek.
